Chesapeake Bay retriever History

The Chesapeake Bay retriever is a large breed of dog that is classified as a retriever, gundog, and sports dog. The first breeders of the Chesapeake Bay retriever were 19th-century duck club owners who raised these dogs to endure subfreezing water temperatures and recover hundreds of birds daily. The breed was developed in the Chesapeake Bay region of the United States during the nineteenth century. Traditionally this breed is used by local market hunters to retrieve ducks, pull fishing nets, and rescue fishermen.

Qualities

These dogs are now largely family pets and hunting companions, recognized for their bright and pleasant demeanor, fearlessness, readiness to work, alertness, intelligence, love of water, and hunting ability. They look similar to a Labrador retriever, but they have a wavy coats. This breed is a very loving, companion, and intelligent duck dog.

Body

Their eyes are unusually clear and yellowish or amber in color. The hindquarters are higher than the shoulders, and the double coat waves on the shoulders, neck, back, and loins. The waterproof coat has slightly slick and associated with a musky odor. Most retriever breeds are more social than these breeds. Moreover, they adore children and are friendly to newcomers. Their eyes are clear, yellowish, or amber hue. Some Chessies become vocal.  This breed is especially notable for its vast and muscular chest, which is used to break up ice while diving into freezing water to hunt ducks.

Coat

These dogs have a double coat which includes an undercoat and an outer coat. The coat of this breed is brown, sedge, and dead grass.

Diseases

The Chesapeake Bay retriever dogs frequently suffer from gastric torsion disease, Follicular Dysplasia Alopecia canine hip dysplasia disease, hypothyroidism disease, progressive retinal atrophy disease, elbow dysplasia disease, entropion, and cerebellar abiotrophy disease.
