The Portuguese water dog originated in Portugal’s Algarve region at sea. Their common nicknames of Portuguese water are portie, or PWD, and Cao de agua Portuguese. They are around the same size as wheaten terriers and are often black, however, they can also be brown. Either a retriever cut or a loin cut is worn with their hair. Lastly, The club of these dogs was established in 1972 and AKC registered it in 1983 successfully.

Qualities

The body is left at its full length while the hindquarters, muzzle, and tail base are shaved. Their hair is curly, wavy, or human-like. The hair on the ears is curly and wavy, and the coat is compact with cylindrical curls. In addition, the coat is lightly sheened and falls in gentle waves rather than curls. This breed spread throughout Portugal’s coast, where they were trained to herd fish into fishermen’s nets, retrieve lost tackle or damaged nets, and act as couriers from ship to ship or ship to shore.

Portuguese Water Dogs rode in fishing trawlers as they sailed from Portugal’s Atlantic waters to the waters of the coast of Iceland in search of cod. Moreover, the wavy-haired species are known as the Algarvian Water Dog or Portuguese Fishing Dog in Portugal, while the curly-coated version is known as encaracolado.
