Dachshund Dog History

Dachshund dog, commonly called the “sausage dog” or “wiener dog,” has a lengthy and fascinating history. Their name, which translates to “badger dog” in German, derives from the fact that they were initially developed in Germany for badger hunting. Thanks to their long, low-slung bodies and tiny legs, they could infiltrate badger caves and flush out the prey. Dachshunds gained popularity in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries before being transferred elsewhere. In 1885, the American Kennel Club (AKC) granted them recognition.

Due to their loving and friendly temperament, dachshunds have become increasingly popular as household pets. Other names for the Dachshund include the wiener, badger, and sausage dog. Dachshund means badger dog. The American Kennel Club initially recognized dachshunds in 1885. However, they were employed in German propaganda throughout World War I. As a result, in the US, the AKC briefly changed its name to Badger Dogs or Liberty Pups. They are now a prevalent dog breed. Several organizations, such as the Dachshund Club of America, are devoted to them. They are renowned for having fun-loving and vivacious dispositions.
